Seeing Beneath the Surface: Why X-Rays Matter for Your Health
Seeing Beneath the Surface: Why X-Rays Matter for Your Health
X-rays are one of the most valuable tools in modern healthcare, allowing providers to see inside the body without surgery or other invasive techniques. Despite their safety and effectiveness, some people remain hesitant to get imaging done due to growing concerns about radiation exposure and potential long-term risks.
As a chiropractic physician, I want to offer some insight into why X-rays play an essential role in chiropractic care—and why, when used appropriately, their benefits far outweigh the risks.
Balancing Risk vs. Reward
Like many aspects of healthcare, taking X-rays involves a risk-versus-reward consideration. While it’s true that radiation exposure should always be minimized when possible, the amount from standard chiropractic X-rays is very small compared to other medical imaging—and the information they provide can be critical for safe and effective treatment.
According to a recent Harvard Health article, more than 80 million CT scans are performed annually in the United States, compared to just 3 million in 1980. CT scans have incredible diagnostic value and have reduced the need for exploratory surgeries, but they also expose patients to significantly higher radiation levels than X-rays.
For perspective:
CT scan (head): ~2 mSv
CT scan (full body): up to 20 mSv or more
Full spine X-rays: ~2.5 mSv
Chest X-ray: ~0.1 mSv
The American College of Radiology recommends limiting lifetime exposure to around 100 mSv—the equivalent of about 10,000 chest X-rays, but only 25 CT scans.
In other words, a standard chiropractic X-ray produces a fraction of the radiation you’d receive from more complex medical imaging.
Why X-Rays Are Important in Chiropractic Care
While chiropractic care is focused on natural, hands-on healing, it’s essential to have a clear and accurate understanding of what’s happening inside the body before beginning treatment.
Here’s why X-rays matter so much in a chiropractic setting:
1. Detecting Underlying Conditions
Not all issues can be detected through palpation or physical examination. X-rays can reveal fractures, spinal degeneration, congenital anomalies, or other pathologies that might otherwise go unnoticed. Treating a patient without this knowledge could lead to ineffective—or even unsafe—adjustments.
2. Ensuring Safe and Targeted Adjustments
Every spine is unique. X-rays allow chiropractors to analyze spinal alignment, curvatures, and joint spacing, helping guide adjustments safely and precisely. This minimizes the risk of overcorrection and enhances treatment effectiveness.
3. Tracking Progress Over Time
For patients undergoing long-term corrective or rehabilitative care, X-rays provide measurable data. Comparing images before and after treatment helps track structural changes and improvements in spinal alignment.
4. Protecting the Patient’s Health
Ultimately, X-rays safeguard patients by giving doctors a clear view of what’s happening beneath the surface. Adjusting “blindly” could overlook serious conditions such as fractures, infections, or tumors—issues that must be referred for medical intervention.
The Bottom Line
X-rays are a cornerstone of safe and effective chiropractic care. They allow chiropractors to work with precision, protect patients from unnecessary risks, and provide the clearest picture possible of what’s really going on inside the body.
While it’s wise to be mindful of radiation exposure, the minimal dose from standard X-rays is vastly outweighed by the benefits of early detection, accurate diagnosis, and personalized treatment.
